They took the name off the road signs
In 2005 the Irish government ruled that the official name of this town was An Daingean and took the word Dingle off the road signs. The town is in the Gaeltacht, the Irish-speaking district, so there was a logic to it. Nobody had asked the town. In 2006 the residents held a vote, and about nine in ten wanted both names. The law was changed in 2011. The signs caught up in 2013.
That is a fair introduction to the place.
Foxy John’s is a pub and a hardware store, and will also rent you a bicycle. Dick Mack’s is a pub and a leather shop. Neither is doing it for the tourists. They just never stopped.
In 1983 a wild dolphin turned up at the harbour mouth and stayed for 37 years. The town named him Fungie, built a fleet of tour boats around him and put up a statue while he was still alive. In October 2020 he left without notice.
The boats go out to look at the coastline now. It was always there.

You can order a pint and a box of screws at the same counter.
What stays open year-round?
The town itself. The grocery shops, the pharmacies, the schools and a core of pubs don’t close. A good many restaurants, guesthouses and boat tours shut from November until around St. Patrick’s Day. January is quiet enough that the people who live here take their own holidays then.
What will winter ask of you?
Waterproofs, not a parka. January days are around 10°C and it seldom freezes. It also seldom stops raining for long. About 1,400 mm falls here in a year, and the Atlantic storms arrive with nothing in the way. It is dark by five in December. There are fires in the pubs for a reason.
How close is the care you need?
Further than you might like. There are family doctors and a community hospital in town, but the nearest emergency department is at University Hospital Kerry in Tralee, 48 km away, about 45 minutes on a road that does not hurry. For anything specialised, Cork is two and a half hours.
Could you live without a car?
In town, yes. It is a few streets on a hill and everything is ten minutes’ walk. Beyond it, not really. Buses run to Tralee, where the trains are, but the best of the peninsula is down roads with no bus on them. The railway to Dingle closed in 1953.
What does a house cost?
If you can find one. Houses in town sold mostly between about €330,000 and €800,000 in 2026. Long-term rentals are close to non-existent, because so much of the housing is let to visitors by the night. Locals have the same problem, and they were here first.
How long can you stay?
Canadians and Americans get 90 days without a visa, and because Ireland is outside the Schengen area, those days don’t count against your time in the rest of Europe. Retiring here from outside the EU means a Stamp 0 permission, which asks for an income of €50,000 a year each. An Irish-born grandparent changes everything. You can apply for citizenship instead.
