The real deal

The coast in winter

Shorter days, bigger skies — and a different kind of wonderful.

A snow-covered beach curves between a pine forest and calm water beneath a foggy winter sky.

Summer gets the postcards, but plenty of people who move to the coast say winter is when a town really becomes home. The crowds thin out, the cafés learn your order and the storms roll in like a show put on just for the locals.

What changes when the season turns

Some shops and ferry routes run on reduced schedules, and the days are short. In exchange you get quiet beaches, dramatic skies and a community that tends to lean on one another a little more.
