The water looks like the Caribbean.
It is Georgian Bay, and it explains the difference the moment you get in.

Where Highway 6 runs out

Tobermory is where southern Ontario runs out. Highway 6 comes up the Bruce Peninsula with Lake Huron on one side and Georgian Bay on the other, and stops at a ferry dock.

It was called Collins Harbour until 1882, when Scottish fishermen renamed it after a harbour town on the Isle of Mull. The original is still there.

There are two harbours, Big Tub and Little Tub. Big Tub is the largest natural freshwater harbour in Canada. Two of the 22 wrecks in Fathom Five National Marine Park lie inside it, in water shallow enough that you can look at them from a boat.

Offshore is Flowerpot Island, named for two pillars of rock. There were three until 1903.

The Bruce Trail ends here, 890 kilometres from Niagara. Or it begins here, depending on which way you were walking.

In July the village is full and Parks Canada is rationing the parking. In October the ferry stops, the cottages are drained and locked, and the 4,400 people who stayed get the place back.

A limestone sea stack shaped like a flowerpot stands at the water’s edge on Flowerpot Island, with forest behind it.
From May to October you need a reservation to park near the Grotto. It is a cave. It is a very good cave.

Before you move

  • What stays open year-round?

Not much. About 4,400 people live on the northern peninsula all year, in fewer than half of its 5,100 houses. The rest are cottages. In winter the village comes down to the Foodland and a handful of others. The restaurants, the dive shops, the tour boats and the ferry stop in October and start again in May.

  • What will winter ask of you?

Patience with one road. The peninsula sits between two large pieces of open water and catches snow squalls from both. In a bad storm Highway 6 is closed between Tobermory and Wiarton, and it is the only way out. People keep the freezer full and the tank topped up.

  • How close is the care you need?

The nearest emergency room is in Lion’s Head, 48 km down the highway, in a hospital with four beds. It is open around the clock. Wiarton is about 30 km past that, and the regional hospital is in Owen Sound, roughly 110 km from the village. Add winter to those numbers before you decide they are fine.

  • Could you live without a car?

No. You can walk around Little Tub Harbour in a few minutes, and that is the end of what you can walk to. The hospital and any shop bigger than the Foodland are down Highway 6. Toronto is about 300 km and four hours away, on a good day.

  • What does a house cost?

Sales in 2026 ran at a median somewhere between $525,000 and $610,000, depending on who was counting. More than half the houses up here are cottages, so you will be bidding against people who plan to use the place six weeks a year. Ask whether it is winterized, whether the road is ploughed, and what the well does in August.

  • How do you get there?

By Highway 6, which starts at Lake Erie in Port Dover and ends at the ferry dock here. From the north, the Chi-Cheemaun crosses from Manitoulin Island in about two hours, from May to mid-October. The name means big canoe in Ojibwe. In winter there is the road, and only the road.
